Choosing a Tar Remover for the Actual Surface
A dark speck is a reason to identify the residue and finish before buying a stronger cleaner. A targeted tar remover may suit the job, but the product name does not establish permission for every plastic, repair or interior material. These two checked selections provide different named methods, with no CDK removal-performance ranking.
Decide whether this is the right task
Start with what you can establish about the mark and the surface beneath it. Ordinary dirt, a bonded deposit and damage to a finish are different problems. Do not use a solvent treatment as a general diagnostic test on an unidentified surface. If the material or repair history is unclear, resolve that uncertainty before choosing a chemical or escalating the process.
A product marketed for tar may also name other residues, but that does not turn it into a universal cleaner. Keep the approved use and removal instructions attached to the exact product. A smaller, localised task may need less equipment than an entire wash, yet it still needs compatible materials and a sensible way to remove the residue.
Keep the selected bottles distinct
The Autoglym selection is the current UK manufacturer page for ITR500, a 500ml bottle. A separately found marketplace candidate describes ITR325 and 325ml, so it is not used as the destination for this selection. The Auto Finesse link selects OB500 500ml through its manufacturer variant, rather than a different gel product with a similar name.
Both links below are unpaid manufacturer options. Checking those identities does not establish stock, seller fulfilment or the contents of a delivered parcel. Recheck the selected bottle and package before checkout. A familiar brand name or a close-looking container is not enough to transfer one product's method to another size or formulation.
Read the material restrictions first
ObliTARate's manufacturer specifically excludes headlights and flags delicate or repaired finishes. Treat those restrictions as part of suitability, not small print to overlook after comparing a price. Do not extend another brand's permission for a particular surface to this formula. The fact that two products target a similar residue does not establish matching material compatibility.
Autoglym also distinguishes exterior and interior instructions. This guide does not combine the two brands into a new all-surface recipe. Check the exact bottle, relevant surface instructions and any finish supplier guidance. If an application is not supported, a discount or stronger-sounding description cannot make it an appropriate choice for that task.
Include removal and cloth handling
The treatment is not finished when a spot appears to dissolve. Plan the product's named removal stage and the handling of used materials before starting. In particular, Auto Finesse advises against machine-washing cloths containing its solvent-based product. The normal microfibre-care routine for a shampoo mitt is not automatically the right route for these used cloths.
The OB500 page also says a trigger is not supplied. That does not automatically mean you should buy one: choose equipment according to its actual application instructions. An accessory adds value only when it supports the intended method. Check the current label and safety information for storage and handling rather than applying a general car-cleaning routine to every solvent.
How CDK weighs value
We look at suitability first, then the complete cost of doing the job. A higher price needs a useful benefit: compatible equipment, contents you need or supported performance evidence. Paying twice as much for the same useful outcome weakens value. Cheap but unsuitable products fail the first check.
The CDK viewpoints below interpret manufacturer and retailer research; no first-hand product testing or measured performance scoring has been carried out. Commission does not determine a verdict. We have not established current comparable costs, so we do not assign numerical product value ratings. Amazon customer stars, when available from an authorised source, are a separate opinion and would not be adjusted or relabelled as CDK scores.
Try the CDK value calculator
Use your own budget assumptions and suitability judgement. This produces your scenario score, not a CDK product rating, a performance test or Amazon customer stars. Nothing is saved or sent.
Enter valid figures and confirm a comparable job to calculate a scenario.
Method: suitability minus 0.5 × log₂(option cost ÷ alternative cost), with the deduction limited to 0–1.5 points and the result floored at zero. A doubling deducts 0.5 points: a hypothetical 5/5 becomes 4.5/5. A cheaper option gets no automatic quality bonus. This is an editorial convention, not a scientifically validated scale.
Checked UK buying options
Listing identities checked on 29 October 2026. Confirm the selected size, contents, current cost and delivery with the retailer. These are unpaid retailer or manufacturer links; we do not earn commission from them.
Autoglym Intensive Tar Remover ITR500 500ml
CDK viewpoint: A targeted tar-removal option where the named surface and method are appropriate.
Keep in mind: The selected bottle is 500ml; the older 325ml candidate is not the same buying identity. Follow the specific exterior or interior instructions.
Value check: Check whether a targeted treatment is needed before adding another general cleaner; include suitable application and removal materials.
Auto Finesse ObliTARate OB500 500ml
CDK viewpoint: A solvent-based tar/adhesive remover to consider for an instruction-supported exterior task.
Keep in mind: The manufacturer excludes headlights, warns about delicate or repaired finishes, supplies no trigger and advises against machine-washing cloths containing this solvent product.
Value check: Count only the equipment its method calls for. A stronger-sounding solvent or extra spray head does not establish a cleaning advantage.
